Understanding the document

Why might you need a South African death certificate overseas?

A South African death certificate may be required to provide official evidence of a death when dealing with matters outside South Africa. This can arise during estate administration, inheritance, probate, citizenship, pensions, insurance, banking and other legal or administrative processes.

In many cases, the person requesting the certificate is a family member, executor or other person dealing with affairs years after the death. You may therefore have only part of the information available. Start with what you know and provide as much identifying detail as possible when you create the case.

The receiving authority may require more than the certificate itself. If the South African death certificate is going to be used officially in another country, it may also need an apostille or another form of authentication. That requirement is determined by the authority receiving the document.

If you have been given a checklist, legal request or written instruction, keep it available. Showing us exactly what has been requested helps establish the appropriate document route before processing begins.
